Milan with kids from NoLo: a family-friendly plan
Milan is a surprisingly easy city for families: a dense metro network, plenty of parks and manageable distances. If you choose NoLo as your base, you get the advantage of a residential, green neighbourhood a short hop from the centre. As hosts — with an apartment set up for families too — here's a realistic itinerary, with no stops that are impossible to do with a pushchair.
Why NoLo works for families
- Space and greenery: NoLo is lived-in, with wide pavements and Parco Trotter within reach to let little ones burn off energy.
- Metro nearby: the M1 (Pasteur/Rovereto) is 5 minutes away and takes you into the centre with no changes. The main M1 stations have lifts — always check, but getting around with a pushchair is doable.
- A calm base in the evening: after a day out, coming back to a quiet neighbourhood (rather than a noisy tourist street) makes a real difference with kids.
A child-friendly day, starting from home
Morning — Parco Trotter and a neighbourhood breakfast. Start slow: breakfast at one of NoLo's cafés and a walk in Parco Trotter, among lawns and tree-lined avenues. It's the right way to ease into the day.
Midday — the centre by metro. From the M1 you reach the Castello Sforzesco and Parco Sempione in minutes: the castle has huge courtyards where children can run, and the park has playgrounds, the Civic Aquarium (one of Europe's oldest) and the Branca Tower. It's the historic-centre-plus-open-space combination that always works with kids.
Afternoon — pick by age. A few tried-and-tested ideas:
- National Museum of Science and Technology (Sant'Ambrogio): interactive halls, a submarine, an area for the youngest. A safe bet for rainy days.
- MUBA — Children's Museum at the Rotonda della Besana: designed exactly for them.
- Duomo and the rooftop terraces: if the kids can manage the stairs (or you take the lift), the view among the spires is an experience.
Evening — back to NoLo. An early dinner and a return to a quiet neighbourhood, with self check-in and no keys to juggle. If you have three full days, slot this day into our Milan in 3 days itinerary.
Practical host tips
- Metro and pushchair: the M1 is the handiest line from our area; check individual stop accessibility on the ATM app.
- Museum hours: many close on Mondays and some require booking — check before you set off.
- Breaks: NoLo and the central parks are full of benches and play areas. With children, fewer stops and more breaks is always the winning strategy.
